While everyone was waiting with anticipation for the iPhone 8, it turned out Apple was also getting ready to serve up something a little more special. . . the iPhone X. The name comes from X meaning ten, and the product is called the iPhone 'ten', rather than iPhone 'ex'.

However, what we’re excited about is what this smartphone means for photographers. Well, let’s take a look at the specs to find out. . . .

The new iPhone X is dust and water resistant!

So, the iPhone X has not one, but two 12-megapixel cameras on the rear of the phone. One of these cameras is wide-angle and the other is telephoto, covering users whatever the subject they wish to capture. Both cameras benefit from dual optical image stabilisation technology and the lenses have maximum apertures of f/1. 8 and f/2. 4. Image quality is set for a boost as the sensor features deeper pixels and a new colour filter.

Both 12-megapixel cameras offer dual optical stabilisation technology.

The cameras are powered by the new A11 Bionic chip, which is a step up from the iPhone 7’s A10 and the iPad Pro’s A10X chips. This processing power will allow the water and dust-resistant iPhone X to also capture 4K video at 60 frames per second, which sees an increase in frame rates from the iPhone 7, which could film up to 30 FPS. What’s more, fans of slow motion footage will be pleased to hear the iPhone X can shoot 240FPS in Full HD - an increase from 60FPS on the iPhone 7. If you’re shooting lots of images and video, you’ll need plenty storage and the iPhone X is available in 64GB/256GB options.

Portrait Lighting mode aims to mimic pro studio set-ups

What’s really grabbing the headlines though is the addition of a TrueDepth system on the iPhone X’s main camera, made up of a dot projector, infrared camera and flood illuminator. The creative opportunities for using this technology to make photos is mindblowing and is sure to be pounced on by innovative image-makers. To make sure you can take full advantage of all these cool imaging features, the iPhone X’s battery has been upgraded to last longer than the previous iPhone 7 models - in fact, it should last two hours more than the iPhone 7. Lastly, a Portrait Lighting mode aims to deliver better image quality when capturing people pictures and enables photographers to mimic studio effects such as pro lighting set-ups. Apple say that these aren't filters, instead the camera studies the image before adding the enhanced lighting. Talking of lighting, the iPhone X also includes slow sync flash and the original Portrait mode works on both the front and rear cameras.

Facial recognition adds an extra level of security to keep images safe.

An added benefit of the 7-megapixel front-facing camera is it's ability to allow access via facial recognition. This means any photos taken on the phone will be protected from thieves - a cutting edge security feature that's sure to be well received

The iPhone 8/Plus shares the 12-MP cameras and video specs, although the max aperture for the telephoto camera is a slighty slower f/2. 8. The iPhone X, iPhone 8/8Plus will be released at the same time, with the shipping date set towards the early part of November and with a US price-tag of $999.
