Before and after: Shooting Raw with the iPhone X

Before and after: Shooting Raw with the iPhone X
ФОТО: dpreview.com

Sebastiaan de With, the designer behind the iPhone photography app Halide, recently published a short piece titled The Power of Shooting RAW on iPhone. And while some of the discussion is a bit basic for most of our readers—it's a safe bet most of the people reading this know what a Raw file is and the advantages it offers—his before-and-after photos demonstrating the power of Raw files, even smartphone Raw files, are worth sharing.

We spoke with de With, who was kind enough to let us share his before-and-after shots in the gallery below.

Of course, you can (mostly) ignore any brand-specific talk—any smartphone that can shoot Raw will produce the additional latitude required to recover highlights and shadows, change the white balance after the fact, avoid heavy-handed built-in noise reduction, and lots more.

One important tidbit he does point out about shooting Raw on an iPhone, though, is about Raw support. The built-in iOS Photos app will display your Raw photos, but it'll display them as a low res JPEG preview without any sort of warning attached. Once you've got your Raw file captured (using Halide, Lightroom Mobile, or any other photo app that supports Raw capture) don't go viewing it in iOS Photos. Load it in Darkroom, Snapseed, VSCO, or Lightroom Mobile, or you'll see a low-res, blurry mess.

Check out the before and after shots in the gallery above, and then head over to de With's full Power of Shooting RAW on iPhone post to read more about the advantages, disadvantages, and "did you know?" tidbits about shooting Raw on an iPhone.
