Lens options for the Fujifilm GFX system just got wider thanks to the introduction of the Laowa 17mm f/4 Zero-D GFX wide angle lens. Available for the GFX 50S, 50R and 100 models, the 17mm offers the 35mm equivalent of a 13.
5mm lens, so its 113° field of view is ideal for landscape, architecture and interior photography. It also features a rectilinear design, which claims to offer close to zero optical distortion, so straight lines in an image stay straight!

The lens, which is due to be available from mid-August, features 21 elements in 14 groups, yet still manages to remain relatively compact and lightweight. It weighs 829g (1. 8lbs) and measures just 12. 5cm (4. 9 inches) in length. Its close focusing capability is impressive as well - 20cm (7. 9 inches) from subject to sensor. In reality, that means subjects can be positioned less than 8cm from the front of the lens.
Given its intended uses, consideration has also been given to using filters with this optic with two options available. Despite its ultra-wide credentials, the front element of the 17mm does not bulge excessively to prevent the use of screw-in filters, so those with an 86mm thread can be attached. Photographers who prefer to use system filters, on the other hand, can choose to buy the optional magnetic filter holder for 100mm slot-in filters. The company claims that two filters can be used without any vignetting.

Priced at $1199 excluding VAT, the 17mm f/4 Zero-D GFX is the fourth lens in Laowa’s Zero-D range, joining the existing 12mm f/2. 8 Zero-D, 9mm f/2. 8 Zero-D and 15mm f/2 Zero-D. See a selection of sample images from the 17mm below:
