It may look strange but Laowa’s 24mm f/14, which launched via a crowdfunding campaign, has the potential to deliver images you never thought possible. Thanks to its quirky probe-barrel shape, Laowa explain that the 24mm f/14 2x Macro Probe is the world’s first consumer-grade probe lens and that it can create a ‘bug-eye perspective that can't be achieved by conventional macro lens’.

Watch what the Laowa lens can capture. . .

The innovative lens can focus close, like, really close - in fact it can focus 2cm away from the subject. However, whereas with a normal macro lens this would create an incredible shallow depth of field, the Laowa lens boasts a much larger zone of focus with a wide-angle view. This is thanks to the lens’ design - the tubular lens barrel is 40cm long, but this also means that photographer’s can keep a distance from their macro subject.

The macro lens gives a wide angle view and features an LED.

What’s more, the Laowa is actually pretty tough - the lens is weather sealed and the front of the lens is waterproof, so you can actually dip the end into liquid to capture underwater images. The lens weighs in at just 474g, making it easy to transport.

Check out how the lens helped make this awesome food video.

The Laowa 24mm probe lens even has an LED (powered by a micro-USB slot on the barrel) at the front of the optic to illuminate subjects, banish shadows, and aid autofocus. While the potential for stills with this lens is clear, there is also huge potential to shoot cool video with fresh perspectives, too.

The quirky lens is waterproof and can be dipped into liquid.

Working with full-frame cameras and available in mounts for Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony FE and even a cine version for use with PL, the lens is expected to retail at $1499 (excluding taxes). More information about the Crowdfunding options can be found here and shipping is expected to start from September with authorised resellers shipping from October.

Watch how the lens can transform your wildlife photography. . .

The good, the bad and the ugly of aerial photography - part 3: equipment

In previous articles I've discussed the advantages of aerial photography and shooting from a helicopter as opposed to shooting from a light plane. But are there any special considerations with regard to equipment when shooting from the air? Since we’ve already established that it’s the superior choice (at least in my opinion), let’s concentrate on the helicopter first. dpreview.com »
