Japanese publication Nikkei reports the global digital camera market saw a decrease in unit shipments of 22 percent in 2018, underscoring the industry's downward trend as smartphones largely replace digital cameras for many consumers.

According to the report, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Olympus were the top five camera makers in 2018 with 85. 2 percent of the market share by units.

Canon largely dominated the digital camera market in 2018, Nikkei reports, with 40. 5 percent of the market and a 3. 9 percent increase in unit shipments. Fujifilm and Olympus both saw an increase in shipments in 2018, though to lesser degrees, at 1. 3 percent and 0. 1 percent, respectively. In contrast, Nikkei reports that Nikon experienced a 2. 7 percent decrease and Sony experienced a 0. 7 percent decrease last year.

With digital camera sales of 20. 2 million units in 2018, a 22. 2 percent drop over 2017, the top five companies in the market saw the following sales volume:

- Canon: 40. 5 percent, a 3. 9 percent increase
- Nikon: 19. 1 percent, a 2. 7 percent decrease
- Sony: 17. 7 percent, a 0. 7 percent decrease
- Fujifilm: 5. 1 percent, a 1. 3 percent increase
- Olympus: 2. 8 percent, a 0. 1 percent increase

The report reflects global digital camera shipment numbers recently released by CIPA, which reports that total sales around the world have been steadily dropping since 2017.
