Nikon has announced it will release firmware updates for its entire line of Z series mirrorless cameras on April 26, including updates the Z50, Z5, Z6, Z7, Z6 II and Z7 II. Although not major, the respective firmware updates should do add new and improve upon existing features.

Firmware version 2. 10 for the Nikon Z50 and firmware version 3. 30 for the Z6 and Z7 adds the ‘Save Focus Position’ option ‘that allows the current focus position to be saved when the camera is turned off and restored when next turned on. ’ The Z6 — and only the Z6 — also receives the voice memo recording/play function found on Nikon’s D6 DSLR camera.

Moving onto the Z5, firmware version 1. 10 adds faster AF detection speed in low-light situations when shooting in the ‘Low-Light AF mode,’ as well as the ‘Save Focus Position’ option found in the Z50 firmware update.

Jumping up to the newer Z6 II and Z7 II cameras, firmware version 3. 30 adds improved AF performance. Nikon details the AF improvements, saying:

‘[Firmware version 1. 20 for the Z6 II and Z7 II include] faster focusing when shooting with AF in low light situations. Further, AF usability when using an external Speedlight will also increase, through improvements to detection performance in scenes where it was difficult to detect faces and eyes, as well as improvements to subject visibility during live view shooting. In addition, tracking frames used for face and eye detection, as well as subject-tracking AF have been improved, enabling smoother and more stable shooting. ’

The firmware updates for the respective cameras should go live on Nikon’s respective product support pages for each camera model on April 26.
