Six years after Nikon first issued a service advisory regarding the sensor ‘dust’ issue that plagued D600 camera units, Nikon has confirmed it will be ending its sensor repair service in January 2020.
After seeing initial reports of a Nikon Japan notice on Nikon Rumors, DPReview contacted Nikon USA, who confirmed the free repair program will close down on January 10, 2020. The full quote from Nikon USA is as follows:
‘As of January 10, 2020, Nikon will no longer offer free corrective services to Nikon D600 owners. Those that wish to have their D600 service after this date will be directed to Nikon Customer Service where repairs will be handled in accordance with standard Nikon service policies. For more information, please visit this site. ’

If you or someone you know owns a D600 affected by the sensor ‘dust’ issue, you have roughly six months to send it to Nikon for repair. In 2014, there were reports that Nikon was simply swapping D600 units for D610 units when affected cameras were sent in, but Nikon noted at the time that each repair is handled on a ‘case-by-case’ basis, so don’t get too excited about a subtle upgrade.
Nikon stated in a 2014 financial Q&A that it had set aside roughly $17. 7 million to address the D600 sensor ‘dust’ issue. It’s unknown at the time whether the program ending is a result of Nikon running out of its allocated funds used to address the issue or other reasons.
