The photography internet rumour sites had been churning with news about the Panasonic GH5S for a couple of weeks, but at the annual CES show in Las Vegas, Panasonic finally put expectant photographers out of their misery by officially launching the new specialised version of its flagship camera.

The big news about this camera are its megapixels and ISO specifications, both of which are drastically different to the standard GH5 and have been adjusted to gear the camera towards specialised low light photography and videography. While the standard GH5 offers photographers 20. 3-megapixels, the GH5S slashes this count in half to 10. 2-megapixels from its high sensitivity MOS sensor for enhanced image quality in low light. In fact the pixels on the Micro Four-Thirds sensor are almost twice as big as those found on the standard GH5.

While the native ISO on a standard GH5 tops out at 25600, the new GH5s sees this ceiling doubled to a native ISO of 51,200. Pair this with the sensitive sensor and Panasonic’s Venus Engine 10 processor and you’ve got all the essentials for capturing high quality images in low light conditions. What’s more, stills photographers will be pleased to hear the GH5S can capture 14-bit RAW format files, which will offer plenty of tolerance and potential in RAW conversion software, such as Adobe Lightroom. The GH5S can even focus down to -5EV to lock onto subjects in near darkness and retains the weather proof durability of the standard GH5.

The GH5S offers 4K Cinema at 60p, increasing creative possibilities for videographers.

But it’s the video capabilities that shine through with the GH5S as, despite the lower megapixel count, the camera can capture ultra high-quality 4K video footage at 60p in Cinema 4K (4090x2160), which Panasonic say is a world’s first for a mirrorless camera. The GH5S offers further options for videographers, by also shooting 4:2:2 10-bit 400-Mbps All-Intra in 4K 30p/25p/24p and 200-Mbps All-Intra in Full HD, plus an impressive slow motion rate of 240fps in Full HD. Like the standard GH5, there’s no time limit for both Full HD and 4K video recording and the GH5S includes Panasonic’s V-Log profile as standard.

The Panasonic GH5S will be available for shipping from February 2 and comes with a US price-tag of $2499 (body only), which is around $500 more than the standard GH5. Additionally, Panasonic also announced a new battery grip (DMW-BGGH5) to extended the battery life and give a more stable hold on the body, plus a XLR Microphone Adaptor (DMW-XLR1) to enable high-quality audio recording with an external XLR microphone. Both these accessories can be bought separately.
