Samsung has announced two new lines of UHS-I U3 Class 10 SD cards: PRO Plus and EVO Plus. The SD cards are designed for photographers and other content creators. The cards have been built to be more durable than other Samsung cards and boast impressive protective measures (more on that later).

Of the new cards, Dr. Mike Mang, vice president of the Memory Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics, says, 'For years, consumers around the world have trusted Samsung to deliver high-performance memory cards in a variety of capacities that meet their unique needs. Samsung has gone beyond that with the PRO Plus and EVO Plus SD cards, providing additional layers of protective measures to withstand intensive usage and the most rugged conditions. '

The new cards are far from the fastest on the market. The PRO Plus offers sequential read and write speeds of up to 100MB/s and 90MB/s respectively, which should prove sufficient for photographic needs and when recording 4K video. The EVO Plus's performance is not quite as clear, although Samsung states it supports transfer speeds of up to 100MB/s, with no word on read/write speeds when in use. Samsung does state that both new lines support 4K UHD recording, although a footnote mentions that 4K UHD video recording is not available in the 32GB and 64GB EVO Plus cards as they are U1, Class 10 cards.

The Samsung PRO Plus and EVO Plus SD cards are available in capacities ranging from 32GB to 256GB. The cards are 'designed with maximum durability in mind' and include 'comprehensive seven-proof protection. ' Samsung states that the cards include protection from water, temperature, x-rays, magnets, shocks, drops and wear. They can withstand drops from up to 5m and work after 'up to 10,000 swipes. ' Both SD card lines come with a 10-year limited warranty.

Let's dig into the fine print and see how rugged these cards are. With respect to water resistance, Samsung states that the cards can be submerged in up to 1m of saltwater for up to 72 hours. In terms of temperature, operating temperatures range from -25°C to 85°C and non-operating ranges go even lower to -40°C. The SD cards are protected against most airport X-ray machines. Protection against magnets applies to up to 15,000 gauss of magnetic force. Samsung states the new cards can withstand a shock of up to 1,500Gs.

The Samsung EVO Plus SD cards will be available on October 19 with prices ranging from $6. 99 USD for the 32GB model to $39. 99 for the 256GB capacity card. The PRO Plus cards will range in cost from $9. 99 for the 32GB card to $49. 99 for the 256GB card. The PRO Plus cards in 128GB and 256GB capacities will be available on October 19 and the 32GB and 62GB cards will be available later, on November 8.
