Sony has released a new firmware update for its ZV-1 camera that adds the ability to use it as a webcam over USB without the need for an HDMI adapter. Firmware version 2. 00 for the ZV-1 doesn’t bring new autofocus or setting changes, but it does make it possible to use the vlogging-oriented camera as a webcam without the need for additional hardware or software.

Once firmware version 2. 00 is installed, it should simply be a matter of plugging the camera in via the included USB cable and firing up the video conferencing or livestreaming program of your choosing.

It’s not just computers though. Sony says you can use the ZV-1 as an external camera with its Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5II smartphones running Android 11. Sony doesn’t specify what apps this setup will work with, and we don’t have the appropriate smartphones on hand to test out ourselves, so the exact workflow remains a mystery for the time being.

In addition to the new webcam functionality, Sony says firmware version 2. 00 also addresses general stability and performance issues.

You can download firmware version 2. 00 for macOS and Windows computers, below. Sony notes the macOS version is not yet compatible with macOS Big Sur (11. 1). You can find installation instructions on Sony’s ZV-1 support page.
