The Afghan Girl, Tiananmen Square, The JFK Assassination, Che Guevara, The Blue Dot. All of these images have stories behind them, often fascinating and usually not well known or understood by the broader public.

Time Magazine will be counting down the world’s 100 most influential images over the next month, beginning on November 17.

The feature is celebrating the “175th anniversary of photography and the birth of photojournalism,” according to the magazine, and will be published online, in print and in a commemorative companion book. For the project, Time has interviewed photographers, celebrities and historical figures to dig into the roots of each image and bring the context and meaning of each image to the forefront.

“Each one is unique for the way in which it changed, influenced, or commemorated a particular world event,” says Time. “From the first sports photograph to ever win the Pulitzer Prize - that of Babe Ruth at Yankee Stadium to the photograph of Student Neda Agha-Soltan's death during Iran's 2009 election protests, each of the photographs in 100 Photographs: The Most Influential Images of All Time is significant in how it forever changed how we live, learn, communicate, and in many cases, view the world. ”

The collection will be published on November 17, but to whet your appetite until then the magazine has produced a short trailer to give viewers an idea of what to expect from the project, and it looks fascinating.
