WINK Horror Short Explores The Creepiness of Emoji

Space Oddity Films brings another satirical horror short to YouTube right in time for the Halloween season. Choosing to explore the truth behind the technology, WINK seeks to provide a commentary on the creepy nature of emojis.

“Emojis naturally possess cold, dead eyes and are of a weird shade of yellow,” says Alex Mann, writer and director of WINK. Likening these symbols to the preserved remains of the people of Pompeii, Mann sees emoji as lifeless facets of human emotion frozen in place. “What better way to get this across than to pay homage to the slasher genre?” he tells DigitalRev.

The short film was shot on a Sony A7S Mark II with Canon L series 24-105mm, 16-35mm, and 100mm macro lenses. For lighting, Mann used one LED panel and china balls; in addition, to candle lights. Amusingly, most of the shoot involved a lot of empty shots of rooms and hallways as the emoji animations needed to be edited in post production. The end result is an emoji horror to challenge the horrific video our DRTV team created a few years ago!
