Xiaomi's new Mix 4 smartphone is its first with under-display selfie camera

Xiaomi has revealed the Mix 4, the latest smartphone in its Mi Mix lineup. The Mix 4, which will be avaialble only in China for the time being, marks the first device from Xiaomi’s Mi Mix series in nearly three years and brings with it new technology, including Xiaomi’s first under-display selfie camera.

Xiaomi says its Camera Under Panel (CUP) technology, which it first showed off back in 2019, is the culmination of ‘three major generations, five years, sixty patents, a $77 million investment and hundreds of engineers. ’ Xiaomi claims the 20MP camera is ‘virtually invisible’ and says it uses ‘hardware and software capabilities to ensure the resulting photographs and videos captured using the front camera retain true colors and details. ’

Specifically, Xiaomi says it uses a special circuit design and transparent curved wiring Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) material to reduce the pixel size and increase the transparency of the smartphone’s display in front of the selfie camera. If any of this sounds familiar, it’s because just last week, smartphone manufacturer Oppo unveiled its latest front-facing under-display camera technology, which appears to use similar technology for its latest under-display camera tech.

The main camera array on the back of the device consists of three camera modules: a 108MP (12,032 x 9,024 pixels) primary module with a 1/1. 33Samsung ISOCELL HMX sensor (1. 6teased earlier this year.

The Mix 4 is constructed of a ceramic body with a bezel-less design and features a 120Hz 6. 67-inch (2400 x 1080 pixels, 400PPI) AMOLED 10-bit display that supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+, a 4,500mAh battery and in in-display fingerprint sensor. The device offers 120W wired fast charging as well as 50W wireless fast charging. Connectivity includes 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ultra Wide Band (UWB) and NFC. The Mix 4 runs Xiaomi’s MIUI skin atop Android 11.

The Xiaomi Mix 4 comes in three colorways (Ceramic Black, Ceramic White and Ceramic Gray) and starts at CNY 4,999 (~$770) for the 8GB/128GB version. For more storage and RAM, there’s also the 8GB/256GB version for CNY 5,299 (~$817), the 12GB/256GB version for CNY 5,799 (~$895) and the 12GB/512GB version for CNY 6,299 (~$972).

Xiaomi hasn’t shared any additional details regarding international availability, so as it stands, the Mix 4 will be limited to China unless you can get your hands on one from an international retailer.
